The "Stalker" in Your Pocket
When you take a photo with your smartphone, it automatically embeds hidden metadata called EXIF. This often includes:
- GPS Coordinates: The exact latitude and longitude where you stood.
- Timestamp: The precise second the photo was taken.
- Device Info: Your phone model and software version.
If you upload this photo directly to a blog, forum, or email it to a stranger, they can download it and see exactly where you live.
How to Protect Yourself
Most major social networks (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) automatically strip this data when you upload. However, email attachments, text messages (iMessage/Android), and direct file transfers DO NOT strip this data.
Always use a "Metadata Remover" app or screenshot your own photo before sending it to untrusted sources.
